About DSIR

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, is dedicated to promoting innovation, industrial R&D, and technology development. Established through a Presidential Notification on January 4, 1985, DSIR aims to bridge the gap between science and industry by fostering collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutions. Formally constituted through a Presidential Notification dated January 4, 1985 (Cabinet Secretariat Notification No. 74/2/1/8-Cab.), as part of the 164th Amendment to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, DSIR is entrusted with a broad mandate. This includes the promotion, development, utilization, and transfer of indigenous technologies. DSIR works in close collaboration with industry, academia, research institutions, and various government bodies to foster a dynamic and innovation-driven ecosystem. It plays a strategic role in enabling the industrial sector—particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs)—to develop and adopt globally competitive, state-of-the-art technologies with high commercial potential.
